Black Magic (Sihr) and Jinn

Black Magic, in other words Witchcraft (Sihr in Arabic), is an agreement set up between a Witch (Sahir in Arabic) and a Demon, which stipulates that the Witch commit certain illegal or polytheistic acts, in return for the Demon’s assistance and obedience in fulfilling the Witch’s request.

“And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah.

And the people learnt what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.” (al-baqara: 102)

Although witchcraft originally spread from Babylon, however it was practiced more by the pharaohs in Egypt. Since Qur’an tells us about its origin, the True name for Witchcraft (Black Magic) is ‘Sihr’ – an Arabic word, having the following literal meanings.

Al-Layth:“Sihr is an act which brings one closer to, and with the help, of Satan (demon/devil)”

Ibn-Mandhur: “When a Sahir (witch) makes something false appear to be real, or makes something appear to people different than its true form, it means that he has given an object a status other than its own (real status), that is called Sihr”

Ibn-Faris: “Some say that Sihr is to make what is false appear to be true”

Shamir, on authority of Ibn-Aisha: “Arabs have given it the name Sihr because; it can transform good health into illness”

Ibn-Al-Qayyim: “Sihr consists of the effects of evil souls (demons) and the reaction of the resultant forces”

The latest and most appropriate meaning comes from Ibn Quddama Al-Maqdisi in Al-Mughni stating:

“Sihr is a set of uqad (knots), ruqa (incantations), and words uttered or written, or carried out in such a way as to affect the body of the subject (al-mashur), his heart and mind, without even coming into contact with him/her. The reality of Sihr is that there are some types that can kill, cause one to fall ill, or act as an obstacle against a man having sexual intercourse with his wife. Other types can separate spouses, and can make them hate or love each other.”

First of all, I will quote a few stories; I’ll then explain its relevance to the Demons associated with Pharaohs.

The story of the so-called curse of the Pharaohs began on November 6, 1922 CE, when Howard Carter sent a telegram to Lord Carnarvon, saying: “I have discovered something wonderful in the Valley of the Kings. I have sealed the doors and vaults until you come and see for yourself.”

Carnarvon came to Luxor on November 23, accompanied by his daughter. Carter went ahead and broke the seals on the doors, and found the body of the king Tutankhamen where it had been lying for 35 centuries. The newspapers seized upon this news with great excitement and it spread rapidly among people. Then Carter7s heart began to beat rapidly and he felt very afraid, but the treasure, gold and fame distracted him from what he was feeling.

On the day when the tomb was opened, twenty-two men gathered whom Carter had invited to attend the opening. But suddenly something strange happened. Thirteen of those whom Carter had invited to attend the opening died one after another in mysterious circumstances. Lord Carter himself was struck with a sudden fever and started to scream, “My body is on fire! And in his delirium he said, “I can see that they are going to roll me in the sand of the desert and put fire in my mouth!” His son came from India to visit him, but he (the son) became ill and soon died in the Continental Hotel in Cairo.

After that, Carter’s assistant, Walter Miss, who has been sent by the American Museum, also died as the result of severe burning. Anees Mansoor (Author of the Arabic version of “The Curse of Pharaohs”) said: There are many stories of people who were connected to the excavation of the grave being affected by disasters.
Dr. Muhammad-Muhammad Ja’far mentions these stories in his book Al-Sihr (Witchcraft), where he says:

In the British Museum there is a finely-made sarcophagus of an Egyptian mummy who was a member of the royal family and a priestess. The story of this sarcophagus, according to the records of the British Museum, is very strange. A Mr. Douglas Maury bought this sarcophagus from Egypt in order to bring it to his house in London, but he and everyone who had anything to do with this sarcophagus met with disaster, until they got rid of it by giving it to the British Museum.

Reality of the Curse of the Pharaohs

Previously I wrote about the Curse of the Pharaohs and included some of the happenings that have occurred in the tombs of the Pharaohs. If you have not, you may refer to the article here:

Curse of the Pharaohs

It has been noted that many of those who have excavated the tombs of the Pharaohs or played any part in transporting their remains have been stricken by various kinds of calamities. The period of time for which the magic/witchcraft lasts depends on how long the substance on which the spell is written lasts. If the spell is written on a piece of paper or cloth, or on a picture of a person, and this paper or cloth or picture is destroyed or burnt, then the spell is canceled out.

Hence sometimes you find that the witch (may Allah curse him) puts his spell in a container of copper and seals it with molten lead in order to protect the substance used. The ancient Pharaohs of Egypt were among the most knowledgeable of people with regard to witchcraft. Allah describes the witchcraft they tried to use against His Prophet Musa (Moses)(AS) as being “great”, as He says in the Quran:

“He [Musa (Moses)] said: ‘Throw you (first)/ So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them, and they displayed a great magic.” (Al-A’raaf 7:116)

Historical and archaeological studies of Pharaonic Egypt have established that the pharaohs were among the most skillful of people in the use of witchcraft. It is clear from the Verses which tell the story of the sorcerers of Pharaoh with the Prophet Musa (Moses) that the people had no religion other than the worship of their kings who claimed to be gods. Pharaoh claimed to be the “lord most high” and to be a god. Allah says of Pharaoh:

“(Fir’aun/Pharaoh) Saying: I am your lord, most high” (Al-Naazi’aat 79:24)

“Fir’aun (Pharaoh) said: “O chiefs! I know not that you have an ilaah (a god) other than me.” (Al-Qasas 28:38)

Hence these sorcerers devoted their skills to the service of those kings during the lifetimes and after their deaths, and the kings sought to bring the most skilled sorcerer/s close to them by giving them gifts. The king Ramses III (1197-1165 BCE) gave the high priest of his time 88,789 prisoners as a gift, leaving him free to sell them or kill them with no one to check on what he did. He also gave him 32 tons of gold. In the eleventh century BCE the priests of the god Amun were given 2400 farms, 83 ships, 46 harbors and half a million sheep.

So the relationship between these sorcerer/s and their kings was very close. Hence the miracle of the Prophet of Allah Musa (Moses)(AS) was of a type commensurate with the area in which they were most skilled. Their challenge to him and their defeat before the divine miracle is mentioned in the Quran. As the Pharaohs and their kings believed in resurrection and eternal life, and they believed that they would be raised from death to find their possessions, treasures and servants, they ordered their sorcerers to use their skills of witchcraft to mummify their bodies and to protect them and their tombs and treasures with spells that would withstand the ravages of time and last for a very long time.

So the sorcerers engraved their spells on solid rocks. It seems—and Allah knows best—that the engravings that have been found in the tombs of the Pharaohs include magical charms which are aimed at protecting the tomb or the treasure. The sorcerers also used iron on which to engrave their charms and spells. Pieces of iron in the form of amulets have been found among the jewels and treasures, or around the necks of the bodies inside the sarcophagi. When the body of the king Tutankhamun was discovered, they found 143 precious stones around it. What confused the scientists was the fact that among these jewels they found a strangely shaped piece of iron which was engraved with hieroglyphics. When they looked for its meaning in the Book of the Dead, they found out that it was a warning:

“Every hand that touches you will be cut off; every nose that smells you will fall off; every eye that sees you will be extinguished (go blind); get up calmly, your majesty.”

Thus it is clear that what is known as the “Curse of the Pharaohs” is nothing more than subjugation of the jinn to guard these bodies and treasures by using powerful magic, and the jinn who inherited this task from their forefathers would not allow anyone to come near to these places without harming them.

Even the words used by the doctors to describe what happened to everyone who explored the tombs of the pharaohs —epilepsy, hallucination, coma and personality split, etc —refer to nothing but symptoms of jinn possession.

The Jinn and Knowledge of the Unseen

Posted by Muhammad Ali on Dec 5, 2010 in Featured, Jinn - Demons | 3 comments
“He (Allah) is the Knower of the Unseen, and He reveals unto none His secret, Save unto every messenger who He has chosen, and then He makes a guard to go before him and a guard behind him that He may know that they have indeed conveyed the messages of their Lord. He surrounds all their doings, and He keeps count of all things.” (al-Jinn 26-28)

It is spread among many people that the jinn know the unseen. And the jinn do their best to spread this wrong notion among humans. But Allah has shown the falsity of their claim in the story of the Prophet Solomon (Sulayman AS). Solomon was given power over the jinn who worked on his behalf. After his death, his body stayed erect, leaning on a staff, and the jinn continued to work. They were not aware that he had died until some crawling creatures ate away the staff he was resting on. Then Solomon fell and it was made clear to the people that the jinn are liars when they claim to know the unseen. Surah Saba in Quran,

“And when We decreed death for him [Solomon], nothing showed his death to them save a creeping creature of the earth which gnawed away his staff. And when he fell the jinn saw clearly how, if they had known the unseen, they would have not continued in despised toil” (Saba: 14)

Surah al-Jinn mentions how they stole messages from the heavens before, and how the number of guards in heaven were increased after Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent. After that the jinn were confounded.

The word “jinn” appear 30 times in 23 hadith in Sahih Bukhari

(1) Narrated Abu Huraira: “The Prophet said, “Last night a big demon (efreet) from the jinns came to me and wanted to interrupt my prayers (or said something similar) but Allah enabled me to overpower him. I wanted to fasten him to one of the pillars of the mosque so that all of you could See him in the morning but I remembered the statement of my brother Solomon (as stated in Quran): My Lord! Forgive me and bestow on me a kingdom such as shall not belong to anybody after me (38.35).” The sub narrator Rauh said, “He (the demon) was dismissed humiliated.”  (Book #8, Hadith #450m)

(2) Narrated ‘Abdul Rahman: Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri told my father, “I see you liking sheep and the wilderness. So whenever you are with your sheep or in the wilderness and you want to pronounce Adhan for the prayer raise your voice in doing so, for whoever hears the Adhan, whether a human being, a jinn or any other creature, will be a witness for you on the Day of Resurrection.” Abu Said added, “I heard it (this narration) from Allah’s Apostle.”  (Book #11, Hadith #583)

(3) Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet set out with the intention of going to Suq ‘Ukaz (market of ‘Ukaz) along with some of his companions. At the same time, a barrier was put between the devils and the news of heaven. Fire commenced to be thrown at them. The Devils went to their people, who asked them, “What is wrong with you?” They said, “A barrier has been placed between us and the news of heaven. And fire has been thrown at us.” They said, “The thing which has put a barrier between you and the news of heaven must be something which has happened recently. Go eastward and westward and see what has put a barrier between you and the news of heaven.”

Those who went towards Tuhama came across the Prophet at a place called Nakhla and it was on the way to Suq ‘Ukaz and the Prophet was offering the Fajr prayer with his companions. When they heard the Qur’an they listened to it and said, “By Allah, this is the thing which has put a barrier between us and the news of heaven.” They went to their people and said, “O our people; verily we have heard a wonderful recital (Qur’an) which shows the true path; we believed in it and would not ascribe partners to our Lord.” Allah revealed the following verses to his Prophet (Sura ‘jinn’) (72): “Say: It has been revealed to me.” And what was revealed to him was the conversation of the jinns.  (Book #12, Hadith #740)

(4) Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet I prostrated while reciting An-Najm and with him prostrated the Muslims, the pagans, the jinns, and all human beings.  (Book #19, Hadith #177)

(5) Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, “When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their foot steps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: What did you use to say about this man, Muhammad ? He will say: I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Apostle. Then it will be said to him, ‘Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.’ ” The Prophet added, “The dead person will see both his places. But a non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, ‘I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say! It will be said to him, ‘Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran).’ Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns.”  (Book #23, Hadith #422)

(6) Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah’s Apostle said, “When (Allah’s) slave is put in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask, ‘What did you use to say about this man (i.e. Muhammad)?’ The faithful Believer will say, ‘I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Apostle.’ Then they will say to him, ‘Look at your place in the Hell Fire; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.’ So he will see both his places.” (Qatada said, “We were informed that his grave would be made spacious.”

Then Qatada went back to the narration of Anas who said;) Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, “What did you use to say about this man.” He will reply, “I do not know; but I used to say what the people used to say.” So they will say to him, “Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran).” Then he will be hit with iron hammers once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to him will hear, except jinns and human beings. (See Hadith No. 422).  (Book #23, Hadith #456)

(7) Narrated Abdur-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Sasaa Ansari: That Abu Said Al-Khudri said to his father. “I see you are fond of sheep and the desert, so when you want to pronounce the Adhan, raise your voice with it for whoever will hear the Adhan whether a human being, or a jinn, or anything else, will bear witness, in favor on the Day of Resurrection.” Abu Said added, “I have heard this from Allah’s Apostle .”  (Book #54, Hadith #517)

(8) Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah: The Prophet said, “Cover your utensils and tie your water skins, and close your doors and keep your children close to you at night, as the jinns spread out at such time and snatch things away. When you go to bed, put out your lights, for the mischief-doer (i.e. the rat) may drag away the wick of the candle and burn the dwellers of the house.” Ata said, “The devils.” (instead of the jinns).  (Book #54, Hadith #533)

(9) Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “A strong demon from the jinns came to me yesterday suddenly, so as to spoil my prayer, but Allah enabled me to overpower him, and so I caught him and intended to tie him to one of the pillars of the Mosque so that all of you might see him, but I remembered the invocation of my brother Solomon: ‘And grant me a kingdom such as shall not belong to any other after me.’ (38.35) so I let him go cursed.”  (Book #55, Hadith #634)

(10) Narrated ‘Abdur-Rahman: “I asked Masruq, ‘Who informed the Prophet about the jinns at the night when they heard the Qur’an?’ He said, ‘Your father ‘Abdullah informed me that a tree informed the Prophet about them.’ ”  (Book #58, Hadith #199)

(11) Narrated Abu Huraira: That once he was in the, company of the Prophet carrying a water pot for his ablution and for cleaning his private parts. While he was following him carrying it(i.e. the pot), the Prophet said, “Who is this?” He said, “I am Abu Huraira.” The Prophet said, “Bring me stones in order to clean my private parts, and do not bring any bones or animal dung.” Abu Huraira went on narrating: So I brought some stones, carrying them in the corner of my robe till I put them by his side and went away. When he finished, I walked with him and asked, “What about the bone and the animal dung?” He said, “They are of the food of jinns. The delegate of jinns of (the city of) Nasibin came to me–and how nice those jinns were–and asked me for the remains of the human food. I invoked Allah for them that they would never pass by a bone or animal dung but find food on them.” (Book #58, Hadith #200)

(12) Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar: I never heard ‘Umar saying about something that he thought it would be so-and-so, but he was quite right. Once, while ‘Umar was sitting, a handsome man passed by him, ‘Umar said, “If I am not wrong, this person is still on his religion of the pre-lslamic period of ignorance or he was their foreteller. Call the man to me.” When the man was called to him, he told him of his thought. The man said, “I have never seen such a day on which a Muslim is faced with such an accusation.” ‘Umar said, “I am determined that you should tell me the truth.”

He said, “I was a foreteller in the pre-lslamic period of ignorance.” Then ‘Umar said, “Tell me the most astonishing thing your female jinn has told you of.” He said, “One-day while I was in the market, she came to me scared and said, ‘Haven’t you seen the jinns and their despair and they were overthrown after their defeat (and prevented from listening to the news of the heaven) so that they (stopped going to the sky and) kept following camel-riders (i.e. ‘Arabs)?” ‘Umar said, “He is right.” and added, “One day while I was near their idols, there came a man with a calf and slaughtered it as a sacrifice (for the idols). An (unseen) creature shouted at him, and I have never heard harsher than his voice. He was crying, ‘O you bold evil-doer! A matter of success! An eloquent man is saying: None has the right to be worshipped except you (O Allah).’ On that the people fled, but I said, ‘I shall not go away till I know what is behind this.’ Then the cry came again: ‘O you bold evil-doer! A matter of success! An eloquent man is saying: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.’ I then went away and a few days later it was said, “A prophet has appeared.”  (Book #58, Hadith #206)

(13) Narrated Abdullah: Regarding the explanation of the Verse: ‘Those whom they call upon (worship) (like Jesus the Son of Mary, angels etc.) desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord (Allah) as to which of them should be the nearer and they hope for His Mercy and fear His torment.’ (17.57) They themselves (e.g. Angels, saints, Apostles, Jesus, etc.,) worshipped Allah, Those jinns who were worshipped by some Arabs became Muslims (embraced Islam), but those human beings stuck to their (old) religion. Al-Amash said extra: ‘Say, (O Muhammad): Call unto those besides Him whom you assume (to be gods).’ (17:56)  (Book #60, Hadith #238)

(14) Narrated Abdullah: Regarding the Verse: ‘Those whom they call upon (worship) (like Jesus the Son of Mary or angels etc.) desire (for themselves) means of access, to their Lord….’ (17.57) (It was revealed regarding) some jinns who used to be worshipped (by human beings). They later embraced Islam (while those people kept on worshipping them).  (Book #60, Hadith #239)

(15) Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “Last night a demon from the jinns came to me (or the Prophet said, a similar sentence) to disturb my prayer, but Allah gave me the power to overcome him. I intended to tie him to one of the pillars of the mosque till the morning so that all of you could see him, but then I remembered the Statement of my brother Solomon:–‘My Lord! Forgive me and bestow on me a kingdom such as shall not belong to any other after me.’ (38.35) The narrator added: Then he (the Prophet) dismissed him, rejected. ‘Nor am I one of the pretenders (a person who pretends things which do not exist).’ (38:86)  (Book #60, Hadith #332)

(16) Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet performed a prostration when he finished reciting Surat-an-Najm, and all the Muslims and pagans and jinns and human beings prostrated along with him.  (Book #60, Hadith #385)

(17) Narrated Ibn Abbas: Allah’s Apostle went out along with a group of his companions towards ‘Ukaz Market. At that time something intervened between the devils and the news of the Heaven, and flames were sent down upon them, so the devils returned. Their fellow-devils said, “What is wrong with you? ” They said, “Something has intervened between us and the news of the Heaven, and fires (flames) have been shot at us.” Their fellow-devils said, “Nothing has intervened between you and the news of the Heaven, but an important event has happened.

Therefore, travel all over the world, east and west, and try to find out what has happened.” And so they set out and travelled all over the world, east and west, looking for that thing which intervened between them and the news of the Heaven. Those of the devils who had set out towards Tihama, went to Allah’s Apostle at Nakhla (a place between Mecca and Taif) while he was on his way to Ukaz Market. (They met him) while he was offering the Fajr prayer with his companions. When they heard the Holy Qur’an being recited (by Allah’s Apostle), they listened to it and said (to each other).

This is the thing which has intervened between you and the news of the Heavens.” Then they returned to their people and said, “O our people! We have really heard a wonderful recital (Qur’an). It gives guidance to the right, and we have believed therein. We shall not join in worship, anybody with our Lord.” (See 72.1-2) Then Allah revealed to His Prophet (Surat al-jinn): ‘Say: It has been revealed to me that a group (3 to 9) of jinns listened (to the Qur’an).’ (72.1) The statement of the jinns was revealed to him .  (Book #60, Hadith #443)

(18) Narrated ‘Aisha: When Allah’s Apostle emigrated to Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal got a fever. I entered upon them and asked, “O my father! How are you? O Bilal! How are you?” Whenever fever attacked Abu Bakr, he would recite the following poetic verses: ‘Everybody is staying alive among his people, yet death is nearer to him than his shoe laces.” And whenever the fever deserted Bilal, he would recite (two poetic lines): ‘Would that I could stay overnight in a valley wherein I would be surrounded by Idhkhir and Jalil (two kinds of good smelling grass). Would that one day I would drink of the water of Majinna and would that Shama and Tafil (two mountains at Mecca) would appear to me.’ Then I came and informed Allah’s Apostle about that, whereupon he said, “O Allah! Make us love Medina as much or more than we love Mecca. O Allah! Make it healthy and bless its Mudd and Sa for us, and take away its fever and put it in Al’Juhfa.”  (Book #70, Hadith #558)

(19) Narrated ‘Aisha: When Allah’s Apostle emigrated to Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal had a fever. I entered upon them and said, “O my father! How are you? O Bilal! How are you?” Whenever Abu Bakr got the fever he used to say, “Everybody is staying alive with his people, yet death is nearer to him than his shoe laces.” And when fever deserted Bilal, he would recite (two poetic verses): “Would that I could stay overnight in a valley wherein I would be surrounded by Idhkhir and Jalil (two kinds of good smelling grass). Would that one day I could drink of the water of Majinna, and would that Shama and Tafil (two mountains at Mecca) would appear to me!” I went to Allah’s Apostle and informed him about that. He said, “O Allah! Make us love Medina as much or more than we love Mecca, and make it healthy, and bless its Sa and its Mudd, and take away its fever and put it in Al-Juhfa.” (See Hadith No 558) . (Book #70, Hadith #581)

(20) Narrated ‘Aisha: Some people asked Allah’s Apostle about the fore-tellers He said. ‘ They are nothing” They said, ‘O Allah’s Apostle! Sometimes they tell us of a thing which turns out to be true.” Allah’s Apostle said, “A jinn snatches that true word and pours it Into the ear of his friend (the fore-teller) (as one puts something into a bottle) The foreteller then mixes with that word one hundred lies.”  (Book #71, Hadith #657)

(21) Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet used to say, “I seek refuge (with YOU) by Your ‘Izzat, None has the right to be worshipped but You Who does not die while the jinns and the human beings die.”  (Book #93, Hadith #480)

(22) Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abdur-Rahman: that Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri said to him, “I see that you like sheep and the desert, so when you are looking after your sheep or when you are in the desert and want to pronounce the Adhan, raise your voice, for no jinn, human being or any other things hear the Mu’adh-dhin’s voice but will be a witness for him on the Day of Resurrection.” Abu Sa’id added, “I heard this from Allah’s Apostle.”  (Book #93, Hadith #638)

(23) Narrated ‘Aisha: Some people asked the Prophet regarding the soothsayers. He said, “They are nothing.” They said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Some of their talks come true.” The Prophet said, “That word which happens to be true is what a jinn snatches away by stealth (from the Heaven) and pours it in the ears of his friend (the foreteller) with a sound like the cackling of a hen. The soothsayers then mix with that word, one hundred lies.”  (Book #93, Hadith #650)

Jinn in Hadith Sahih Muslim

The word “jinn” appear 29 times in 17 hadith in Sahih Muslim.

(1) Ibn ‘Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) neither recited the Qur’an to the jinn nor did he see them. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) went out with some of his Companions with the intention of going to the bazaar of ‘Ukaz And there had been (at that time) obstructions between satans and the news from the Heaven, and there were flung flames upon them. So satan went back to their people and they said: What has happened to you? They said: There have been created obstructions between us and the news from the Heaven. And there have been flung upon us flames. They said: It cannot happen but for some (important) event.

So traverse the eastern parts of the earth and the western parts and find out why is it that there have been created obstructions between us and the news from the Heaven. So they went forth and traversed the easts of the earth and its wests. Some of them proceeded towards Tihama and that is a nakhl towards the bazaar of ‘Ukaz and he (the Holy Prophet) was leading his Companions in the morning prayer. So when they heard the Qur’an. they listened to it attentively and said: It is this which has caused obstruction between us and news from the Heaven.

They went back to their people and said: O our people, we have heard a strange Qur’an which directs us to the right path; so we affirm our faith in it and we would never associate anyone with our Lord. And Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, revealed to His Apostle Muhammad (may peace be upon him):” It has been revealed to me that a party of jinn listened to it” (Qur’an, surah-jinn:1).  (Book #004, Hadith #0902)

(2) Dawud reported from ‘Amir who said: I asked ‘Alqama if Ibn Mas’ud was present with the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) on the night of the jinn (the night when the Holy Prophet met them). He (Ibn Mas’uad) said: No, but we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) one night and we missed him. We searched for him in the valleys and the hills and said.

He has either been taken away (by jinn) or has been secretly killed. He (the narrator) said. We spent the worst night which people could ever spend. When it was dawn we saw him coming from the side of Hiri’. He (the narrator) reported. We said: Messenger of Allah, we missed you and searched for you, but we could not find you and we spent the worst night which people could ever spend. He (the Holy Prophet) said: There came to me an inviter on behalf of the jinn and I went along with him and recited to them the Qur’an.

He (the narrator) said: He then went along with us and showed us their traces and traces of their embers. They (the jinn) asked him (the Holy Prophet) about their provision and he said: Every bone on which the name of Allah is recited is your provision. The time it will fall in your hand it would be covered with flesh, and the dung of (the camels) is fodder for your animals. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Don’t perform istinja with these (things) for these are the food of your brothers (jinn).  (Book #004, Hadith #0903)

(3) This hadith has been reported by Dawud with the same chain of transmitters up to the word (s):” The traces of their embers.” Sha’bi said: They (the jinn) asked about their provision, and they were the jinn of al-jazira, up to the end of the hadith, and the words of Sha’bi have been directly transmitted from the hadith of Abdullah.  (Book #004, Hadith #0904)

(4) Abu Huraira reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) saying: A highly wicked one amongst the jinn escaped last night to interrupt my prayer, but Allah gave me power over him, so I seized him and intended to tie him to one of the pillars of the mosque in order that you, all together or all, might look at him, but I remembered the supplication of my brother Sulaiman:” My Lord, forgive me, give me such a kingdom as will not be possible for anyone after me” (Qur’an).  (Book #004, Hadith #1104)

(5) ‘A’isha reported: I said: Allah’s Messenger, the kahins used to tell us about things (unseen) and we found them to be true. Thereupon he said: That is a word pertaining to truth which a jinn snatches and throws into the ear of his friend, and makes an addition of one hundred lies to it.  (Book #026, Hadith #5535)

(6) ‘Urwa reported from ‘A’isha that she said that people asked Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) about the kahins. Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to them: It is nothing (i. e. it is a mere superstition). They said: Allah’s Messenger, they at times narrate to us things which we find true. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: That is a word pertaining to truth which a jinn snatches away and then cackles into the ear of his friend as the hen does. And then they mix in it more than one hundred lies.  (Book #026, Hadith #5536)

(7) ‘Abdullah. Ibn ‘Abbas reported: A person from the Ansar who was amongst the Companions of Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) reported to me: As we were sitting during the night with Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him), a meteor shot gave a dazzling light. Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: What did you say in the pre-Islamic days when there was such a shot (of meteor)? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best (the actual position), but we, however, used to say that that very night a great man had been born and a great man had died, whereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: (These meteors) are shot neither at the death of anyone nor on the birth of anyone.

Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, issues Command when He decides to do a thing. Then (the Angels) supporting the Throne sing His glory, then sing the dwellers of heaven who are near to them until this glory of God reaches them who are in the heaven of this world. Then those who are near the supporters of the Throne ask these supporters of the Throne: What your Lord has said?

And they accordingly inform them what He says. Then the dwellers of heaven seek information from them until this information reaches the heaven of the world. In this process of transmission (the jinn snatches) what he manages to overhear and he carries it to his friends. And when the Angels see the jinn they attack them with meteors. If they narrate only which they manage to snatch that is correct but they alloy it with lies and make additions to it.  (Book #026, Hadith #5538)

(8) Abu as-Sa’ib, the freed slaved of Hisham b. Zuhra, said that he visited Abu Sa’id Khudri in his house, (and he further) said: I found him saying his prayer, so I sat down waiting for him to finish his prayer when I heard a stir in the bundles (of wood) lying in a comer of the house. I looked towards it and found a snake. I jumped up in order to kill it, but he (Abu Sa’id Khudri) made a gesture that I should sit down. So I sat down and as he finished (the prayer) he pointed to a room in the house and said: Do you see this room? I said: Yes. He said: There was a young man amongst us who had been newly wedded. We went with Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) (to participate in the Battle) of Trench when a young man in the midday used to seek permission from Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) to return to his family.

One day he sought permission from him and Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) (after granting him the permission) said to him: Carry your weapons with you for I fear the tribe of Quraiza (may harm you). The man carried the weapons and then came back and found his wife standing between the two doors. He bent towards her smitten by jealousy and made a dash towards her with a spear in order to stab her. She said: Keep your spear away and enter the house until you see that which has made me come out. He entered and found a big snake coiled on the bedding.

He darted with the spear and pierced it and then went out having fixed it in the house, but the snake quivered and attacked him and no one knew which of them died first, the snake or the young man. We came to Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) and made a mention to him and said: Supplicate to Allah that that (man) may be brought back to life. Thereupon he said: Ask forgiveness for your companion and then said: There are in Medina jinns who have accepted Islam, so when you see any one of them, pronounce a warning to it for three days, and if they appear before you after that, then kill it for that is a devil.  (Book #026, Hadith #5557)

(9) Abu Sa’id Khudri reported Allah’s Messenger having said: There is a group of jinns in Medina who accepted Islam, so he who would see anything from these occupants should warn him three times; and if he appears after that, he should kill him for he is a satan.  (Book #026, Hadith #5559)

(10) Abu Dharr reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: My servants, I have made oppression unlawful for Me and unlawful for you, so do not commit oppression against one another. My servants, all of you are liable to err except one whom I guide on the right path, so seek right guidance from Me so that I should direct you to the right path. O My servants, all of you are hungry (needy) except one whom I feed, so beg food from Me, so that I may give that to you. O My servants, all of you are naked (need clothes) except one whom I provide garments, so beg clothes from Me, so that I should clothe you.

O My servants, you commit error night and day and I am there to pardon your sins, so beg pardon from Me so that I should grant you pardon. O My servants, you can neither do Me any harm nor can you do Me any good. O My servants, even if the first amongst you and the last amongst you and even the whole of human race of yours, and that of jinns even, become (equal in) God-conscious like the heart of a single person amongst you, nothing would add to My Power. O My servants, even if the first amongst you and the last amongst you and the whole human race of yours and that of the jinns too in unison become the most wicked (all beating) like the heart of a single person, it would cause no loss to My Power. O My servants, even if the first amongst you and the last amongst you and the whole human race of yours and that of jinns also all stand in one plain ground and you ask Me and I confer upon every person what he asks for, it would not. in any way, cause any loss to Me (even less) than that which is caused to the ocean by dipping the needle in it.

My servants, these for you I shall reward you for thern, so he who deeds of yours which I am recording finds good should praise Allah and he who does not find that should not blame anyone but his ownself. Sa’id said that when Abu Idris Khaulini narrated this hadith he knelt upon his knees.  (Book #032, Hadith #6246)

(11) Ibn ‘Abbas reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) used to say:” O Allah, it is unto Thee that I surrender myself. I affirm my faith in Thee and repose my trust in Thee and turn to Thee in repentance and with Thy help fought my adversaries. O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee with Thine Power; there is no god but Thou, lest Thou leadest me astray. Thou art ever-living that dieth not, while the jinn and mankind die.”  (Book #035, Hadith #6561)

(12) Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There are one hundred (parts of) mercy for Allah and He has sent down out of these one part of mercy upon the jinn and human beings and the insects and it is because of this (one part) that they love one another, show kindness to one another and even the beast treats its young one with affection, and Allah has reserved ninetynine parts of mercy with which He would treat His servants on the Day of Resurrection. (Book #037, Hadith #6631)

(13) Abdullah b. Mas’ud reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: There is none amongst you with whom is not an attache from amongst the jinn (devil). They (the Companions) said: Allah’s Messenger, with you too? Thereupon he said: Yes, but Allah helps me against him and so I am safe from his hand and he does not command me but for good.  (Book #039, Hadith #6757)

(14) ‘A’isha reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: The Angels were born out of light and the jinns were born out of the spark of fire and Adam was born as he has been defined (in the Qur’an) for you (i. e. he is fashioned out of clay).  (Book #042, Hadith #7134)

(15) Abdullah b. Mas’ud reported in connection with the words of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious:” Those to whom they call upon, themselves seek the means or access to their Lord as to whoever of them becomes nearest” (xvii. 57) that it related to a party of jinn who were being worshipped and they embraced Islam but those who worshipped them kept on worshipping them (though the jinn whom the misguided people worshipped had become Muslims). It was then that this verse was revealed.  (Book #043, Hadith #7182)

(16) Abdullah b. Mas’ud reported in connection with the verse:” Those whom they call upon, themselves seek the means of access to their Lord,” that it related to a group of people who worshipped a party amongst the jinn. The group from amongst the jinn embraced Islam, but the people kept worshipping them as they did before, and it was (on this occasion) that the verse was revealed:” Those whom they call upon, themselves seek the means of access to their Lord.” This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Sulaimin with the same chain of transmitters.  (Book #043, Hadith #7183)

(17) Abdullah b. Mas’ud said in connection with the verse:” Those whom they call upon, themselves seek the means of access to their Lord,” that that verse was revealed in connection with a party of Arabs who used to worship a group amnogst the jinn; the jinn embraced Islam but the people kept worshipping them without being conscious of it. Then this verse was revealed:” Those whom they call upon, themselves seek the means of access to their Lord.”  (Book #043, Hadith #7184)

Jinn in Hadith Sunan Abudawud

(1) Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: These privies are frequented by the jinns and devils. So when anyone amongst you goes there, he should say: “I seek refuge in Allah from male and female devils.”  (Book #1, Hadith #0006)

(2) Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas’ud: A deputation of the jinn came to the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and said: O Muhammad, forbid your community to cleanse themselves with a bone or dung or charcoal, for in them Allah has provided sustenance for us. So the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) forbade them to do so.  (Book #1, Hadith #0039)

(3) Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas’ud: AbuZayd quoted Abdullah ibn Mas’ud as saying that on the night when the jinn listened to the Qur’an the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: What is in your skin vessel? He said: I have some nabidh. He (the Holy Prophet) said: It consists of fresh dates and pure water. Sulayman ibn Dawud reported the same version of this tradition on the authority of AbuZayd or Zayd. But Sharik said that Hammad did not mention the words “night of the jinn”.  (Book #1, Hadith #0084)

(4) Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was expelled (from Paradise), on it his contrition was accepted, on it he died, and on it the Last Hour will take place. On Friday every beast is on the lookout from dawn to sunrise in fear of the Last Hour, but not jinn and men, and it contains a time at which no Muslim prays and asks anything from Allah but He will give it to him. Ka’b said: That is one day every year. So I said: It is on every Friday. Ka’b read the Torah and said:

The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) has spoken the truth. AbuHurayrah said: I met Abdullah ibn Salam and told him of my meeting with Ka’b. Abdullah ibn Salam said: I know what time it is. AbuHurayrah said: I asked him to tell me about it. Abdullah ibn Salam said: It is at the very end of Friday. I asked: How can it be when the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) has said: “No Muslim finds it while he is praying….” and this is the moment when no prayer is offered. Abdullah ibn Salam said: Has the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) not said: “If anyone is seated waiting for the prayer, he is engaged in the prayer until he observes it.” I said: Yes, it is so.  (Book #3, Hadith #1041)

(5) Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr: When the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) was travelling and night came on, he said: O earth, my Lord and your Lord is Allah; I seek refuge in Allah from your evil, the evil of what you contain, the evil of what has been created in you, and the evil of what creeps upon you; I seek refuge in Allah from lions, from large black snakes, from other snakes, from scorpions, from the evil of jinn which inhabit a settlement, and from a parent and his offspring.  (Book #14, Hadith #2597)

(6) Narrated Al-Bara’ ibn Azib: We went out with the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) accompanying the bier of a man of the Ansar. When we reached his grave, it was not yet dug. So the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) sat down and we also sat down around him as if birds were over our heads. He had in his hand a stick with which he was scratching the ground. He then raised his head and said: Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment in the grave. He said it twice or thrice.

The version of Jabir adds here: He hears the beat of their sandals when they go back, and at that moment he is asked: O so and so! Who is your Lord, what is your religion, and who is your Prophet? Hannad’s version says: Two angels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him: Who is your Lord? He will reply: My Lord is Allah. They will ask him: What is your religion? He will reply: My religion is Islam. They will ask him: What is your opinion about the man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply:

He is the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). They will ask: Who made you aware of this? He will reply: I read Allah’s Book, believed in it, and considered it true; which is verified by Allah’s words: “Allah’s Book, believed in it, and considered it true, which is verified by Allah’s words: “Allah establishes those who believe with the word that stands firm in this world and the next.” The agreed version reads: Then a crier will call from Heaven:

My servant has spoken the truth, so spread a bed for him from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open a door for him into Paradise. So some of its air and perfume will come to him, and a space will be made for him as far as the eye can see. He also mentioned the death of the infidel, saying: His spirit will be restored to his body, two angels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him: Who is your Lord? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will ask him: What is your religion? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will ask: Who was the man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. Then a crier will call from Heaven:

He has lied, so spread a bed for him from Hell, clothe him from Hell, and open for him a door into Hell. Then some of its heat and pestilential wind will come to him, and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together. Jabir’s version adds: One who is blind and dumb will then be placed in charge of him, having a sledge-hammer such that if a mountain were struck with it, it would become dust. He will give him a blow with it which will be heard by everything between the east and the west except by men and jinn, and he will become dust. Then his spirit will be restored to him.  (Book #40, Hadith #4735)

(7) Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said to me: Have the mugharribun been seen (or some other word) among you? I asked: What do the mugharribun mean? He replied: They are those in whom is a strain of the jinn.  (Book #41, Hadith #5088)

(8) Narrated Al-Abbas ibn AbdulMuttalib: Al-Abbas said to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him): We wish to sweep out Zamzam, but in it there are some of these jinnan, meaning small snakes; so the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) ordered that they should be killed.  (Book #41, Hadith #5231)

(9) Narrated AbuSa’id al-Khudri: Muhammad ibn AbuYahya said that his father told that he and his companion went to AbuSa’id al-Khudri to pay a sick visit to him. He said: Then we came out from him and met a companion of ours who wanted to go to him. We went ahead and sat in the mosque. He then came back and told us that he heard AbuSa’id al-Khudri say: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: Some snakes are jinn; so when anyone sees one of them in his house, he should give it a warning three times. If it return (after that), he should kill it, for it is a devil.  (Book #41, Hadith #5236)

Jinn in Hadith Malik’s Muwatta

(1) Yahya related to me from Malik from Abd arRahman ibn Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abu Sasaca al-Ansari, and later al-Mazini, that his father told him that Abu Said al-Khudri had said to him, “I see that you love sheep and the desert. When you are among your sheep or in your desert, call the prayer and raise your voice in the adhan, because I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, ‘No jinn or man oranything within range hears the voice of the muadhdhin except that it bears witness for him on the day of rising.’ ”  (Book #3, Hadith #3.1.5)

(2) Yahya related to me from Malik from Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn al-Had from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith at-Taymi from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf that Abu Hurayra said, “I went out to at-Tur (Mount Sinai) and met Kab al Ahbar and sat with him. He related to me things from the Tawrah and I related to him things from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Among the things I related to him was that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘The best of days on which the sun rises is the day of jumua. In it Adam was created, and in it he fell from the Garden. In it he was forgiven, and in it he died.

In it the Hour occurs, and every moving thing listens from morning till sunset in apprehension of the Hour except jinn and men. In it is a time when Allah gives toa muslim slave standing in prayer whatever he asks for.’ Kab said, ‘That is one day in every year.’ I said, ‘No, in every jumua.’ Then Kab recited the Tawrah and said, ‘The Messenger of Allah has spoken the truth.’ ” Abu Hurayra continued, “I met Basra ibn Abi Basra al-Ghiffari and he said, ‘Where have you come from?’ I said, ‘From at-Tur.’ He said, ‘If I had seen you before you left, you would not have gone. I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, “Only make a special journey to three mosques: the mosque of the Haram (Makka), this mosque (Madina), and the mosque of Ilya or the Bait al-Maqdis (two names of Jerusalem).” ‘ ” (He was not sure which expression was used.)

Abu Hurayra continued, “Then I met Abdullah ibn Salam and I told him that I had sat with Kabal-Ahbar, and I mentioned what I had related to him about the day of jumua, and told him that Kab had said, ‘That is one day in every year.’ Abdullah ibn Salam said, ‘Kab lied,’ and I added, ‘Kab then recited the Tawrah and said, “No, it is in every jumua.” ‘ Abdullah ibn Salam said, ‘Kab spoke the truth. ‘Then Abdullah ibn Salam said, ‘I know what time that is.’ ” Abu Hurayra continued, “I said to him, ‘Let me know it – don’t keep it from me.’ Abdullah ibn Salam said, ‘It is the last period of time in the dayof jumua.’ ”

Abu Hurayra continued, “I said, ‘How can it be the last period of time in the day of jumua, when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “a muslim slave standing in prayer”, and that is a time when there is no prayer?’ Abdullah ibn Salam replied, ‘Didn’t the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, “Whoever sits waiting for the prayer is in prayer until he prays?” “‘ Abu Hurayra added, “I said, ‘Of course.’ He said, ‘Then it is that.’ ”  (Book #5, Hadith #5.7.17)

(3) Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that some men from Iraq said to him, “Abu Abd ar-Rahman, we buy the fruit of the palm and grapes and we squeeze them into wine and we sell it.” Abdullah ibn Umar said, “I call on Allah and His angels and whoever hears of jinn and men to testify to you that I order you not to buy it nor sell it nor to press it nor to drink it nor to give it to people to drink. It is something impure from the work of Shaytan.” (Book #42, Hadith #42.5.15)

(4) Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that A’isha, umm al-muminin said, “When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to Madina, Abu Bakr and Bilal came down with a fever. I visited them and said, ‘Father, how are you? Bilal, how are you?'” She continued, “When Abu Bakr’s fever worsened he would say, ‘Every man is struck down among his people in the morning – death is nearer than the strap of his sandal.'”

it left Bilal, he raised his voice and said, ‘Would that I knew whether I will spend a night at the valley of Makka with the idhkhir herb and jalil herb around me. Will I go one day to the waters of Majinna? Will the mountains of Shama and Tafil appear to me?’ ” ‘ A’isha continued, “I went to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and informed him. He said, ‘O Allah! Make us love Madina as much as we love Makka or even more. Make it sound and bless us in our sa and mudd. Remove its fever and put it in al-Juhfa.’ ”  (Book #45, Hadith #45.4.14)

(5) Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said said, “When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was taken on the Night Journey, he saw an evil jinn seeking him with a torch of fire. Whenever the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, turned, he saw him. Jibril said to him, ‘Shall I teach you some words to say? When you say them, his torch will be put out and will fall from him.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Yes, indeed.’

Jibril said, ‘Say, ‘I seek refuge with the Noble Face of Allah and with the complete words of Allah which neither the good person nor the corrupt can exceed, from the evil of what descends from the sky and the evil of what ascends in it, and from the evil of what is created in the earth and the evil of what comes out of it, and from the trials of the night and day, and from the visitations of the night and day, except for one that knocks with good, O Merciful!” “‘ Audhu bi wajhi’llahi’ l-karim wa bi kalimati’llahi’t-tammati. Allati la yujawazu hunna barra wa la fajir, min sharri ma yanzil min as-sama, wa sharri ma yaruju fiha, wa sham ma dhara’ fi’l-ard, wa sharri ma yakhruju minha, wa min fitani’l-layli wa’n-nahar, wa min tawariqi’l-layli wa’n-nahar illa tariqan yatruq bikhayr ya Rahman!  (Book #51, Hadith #51.4.10)

(6) Malik related to me that he heard that Umar ibn al-Khattab wanted to go to Iraq, and Kabal-Ahbar said to him, “Do not go there, amir al-muminin. There is nine-tenths of sorcery there and it is the place of the rebellious jinn and the disease which the doctors are unable to cure.”  (Book #54, Hadith #54.11.30)

(7) Malik related to me from Safiyy, the mawla of Ibn Aflah that Abu’s-Saib, the mawla of Hisham ibn Zuhra said, “I went to Abu Said al-Khudri and found him praying. I sat to wait for him until he finished the prayer. I heard a movement under a bed in his room, and it was a snake. I stood up to kill it, and Abu Said gestured to me to sit. When he was finished he pointed to a room in the house and said, ‘Do you see this room?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘There was a young boy in it who had just got married. He went out with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to al-Khandaq, (the ditch which the muslims dug in the 5th year of the Hijra to defend Madina against the Quraysh and their allies). When he was there, the youth came and asked his permission, saying, “Messenger of Allah. Give me permission to return to my family.”

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave him permission and said, “Take your weapons with you, for I fear the Banu Quraydha tribe. They may harm you.” The youth went to his family and found his wife standing between the two doors. He lifted his spear to stab her as jealousy had been aroused in him. She said, “Don’t be hasty until you go in and see what is in your house.” He entered and found a snake coiled up on his bed. He transfixed it with his spear and then went out with it and pitched it into the house. The snake stirred on the end of the spear and the youth fell dead. No one knew which of them died first, the snake or the youth. That was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, “There are jinn in Madina who have become muslim. When you see one of them, call out to it for three days. If it appears after that, then kill it, for it is a shaytan.” “‘  (Book #54, Hadith #54.12.33)

Jinn in Quran

Jinn in Quran. The word(s) ‘Jinn’ appears 32 times in 31 verses of the Quran. However, the word Aalameen has come great many times which refers to both Human and Jinn, Yet I have only gathered the Verses that specifically has the word Jinn in them.

(2) And thus did We make for every prophet an enemy, the Shaitans from among men and jinn, some of them suggesting to others varnished falsehood to deceive (them), and had your Lord pleased they would not have done it, therefore leave them and that which they forge.

(  سورة الأنعام  , Al-Anaam, Chapter #6, Verse #112)

(3) And on the day when He shall gather them all together: O assembly of jinn! you took away a great part of mankind. And their friends from among the men shall say: Our Lord! some of us profited by others and we have reached our appointed term which Thou didst appoint for us. He shall say: The fire is your abode, to abide in it, except as Allah is pleased; surely your Lord is Wise, Knowing.

(  سورة الأعراف  , Al-Araf, Chapter #7, Verse #179)

(7) Except those on whom your Lord has mercy; and for this did He create them; and the word of your Lord is fulfilled: Certainly I will fill hell with the jinn and the men, all together.

(10) And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam; they made obeisance but Iblis (did it not). He was of the jinn, so he transgressed the commandment of his Lord.
