Do Jinn Marry & Reproduce
It is apparent that the jinn do have sexual intercourse. To prove this, most of the scholars refer to the description of the spouses in paradise. Allah says concerning them,
Therein are those of modest gaze, whom neither man nor jinn will have touched before them. (55:60)
And We created you in pairs. (78:08)
Glory be to Him, Who has created all the pairs of that which the earth produces, as well as of their own (human) kind (male and female), and of that which they know not. (36:36)
And Who has created all the pairs and has appointed for you ships and cattle on which you ride. (43:12)
And of all things We created two mates; perhaps you will remember. (51:49)
And that He (Allah) creates the pairs, male and female. (53:45)
Other than the above, there is one weak narration relevant to this subject. Despite the fact that it’s chain is not so strong and is in fact a weak narration, most people seem to believe in it.
“The jinn have children in the same way that the sons of Adam have children, but theirs are more in number”
This hadith was related by ibn Abu Haatim and Abu al-Shaikh in al-Udhma, on the authority of Qataada.
Despite the above, there still are people who deny this opinion. Some of them are at a point that there are different types of jinn – Some who reproduce and die, while others do not die nor reproduce. But there, however, has been no proof for this. In fact, every Jinn has to die, and will be held accountable for their actions.
Do Jinn & Demons Die
There is no doubt that the jinn, and demons among them, do die.
The following verse from the Quran applies to them,
“Whatsoever is on it (the earth) will perish. And the Face of your Lord full of Majesty and Honor will abide forever. Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinns and men) deny?” (Al-Rahman: 26-28)
A hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari, which was reported by Ibn Abbas, says that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used to say,
“I seek refuge, by your Glory, the One, whom there is no other god but You (Allah), the One who does not die, and the jinn and mankind do die.”
Wahb ibn Munabih (An Old Scholar) said, “The jinn are of different kinds. One is a pure jinn, and that is like a wind that does not eat or drink, nor does it die or procreate. And there is a class of them that does eat, drink, procreate and has sex and dies. And those are those female demons and desert demons and similar others.”
Refer, lawaami al-anwaar 2/222 by ibn Jarir atTabari.
But what Wahb said is itself in need of evidence and cannot be considered a proof on its own. Everything will perish, and there are no jinn that do not die when the Quran speaks of it, except for Satan.
The accursed Satan (Iblees) is the only jinn that has been given respite and life until the Day of Judgment.
(Iblis) said: “Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (i.e. the Day of Resurrection).”
(Allah) said, “Indeed, you are of those reprieved.” (Al-A’raaf: 14-15).
Lifespan of the Jinn & Demons
Concerning their lifespan, we do not have clear evidence that proves the length of their lives. However, most of the scholars believe that they have a life longer than our lives. They say that a jinn would live over a thousand years; that is why most people go to the soothsayers, often to know about history through these jinn. But only Allah knows how correct they speak of history.
Since a Jinn is never allowed to contact a Human just like Human beings are not allowed to contact them. So it is most probably a bad jinn who would cross his dimension and work with someone who speaks of history in return for money and Shirk. Still, most scholars, who believe to have contacted honest Muslim jinn, speak that they have a life longer than our lives, and that is how they know about history.
I personally met a Scholar here in Pakistan. He told me that he is being contacted by Good-jinn, only to know about the teachings and rulings of Islam, and to know about the glad tidings that Allah has sent down for the believers among the jinn. He told me that one of the jinn, who came in contact with the Prophet (pbuh), passed away just Recently; believing that he had a life of over 1400 years.
Also, there is a hadith that speaks about their population, but that too is Za-ef (weak). Most people say that the reason they are More in number is not only because they have a life longer but that they have more children.
“The jinn have children in the same way that the sons of Adam have children, but theirs are more in number”
It was related by ibn Abu Haatim and Abu al-Shaikh in al-Udhma, on the authority of Qataada.
Lifespan of Iblees
Iblees – the accursed Satan, is the only jinn that has been given respite and life until the Day of Judgment.
(Iblis) said: “Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (i.e. the Day of Resurrection).”
(Allah) said, “Indeed, you are of those reprieved.” (Al-A’raaf: 14-15).
Marriage between the jinn and humans
People often talk about men marrying jinn, or some woman marrying one of the jinn; or a woman being proposed to by one. Old scholars mentioned many such reports from the early generations and they pointed to the existence of marriages between humans and jinn.
Ibn Taimiya said,
“Humans and jinn have gotten married and have had children; this has happened often and is well-known.” (Majmoo Fatwa, vol 19: p 39)
After assuming it to be possible, many of the scholars showed a dislike for such a marriage. Scholars such as Ishaaq, al-Hasan, Qataada and al-Hukum were known to have shown a dislike for it. Although they could not find any clear text that would prohibit it but they themselves did not like for it to occur and Imam Malik gave his reason for saying so,
“I hate that it would be the case that we would find a woman who is pregnant and we ask her, ‘Who is your husband?’ and she replies, ‘One of the jinn’ Much evil would be the result of that.”
The scholars, in reply to such incidents, answered that – From the blessings of Allah is that He created for mankind spouses of their own species. Allah says in the Quran,
“And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect.” (Al-Rum: 21)
Even if it could occur, it would not be possible to have that companionship and love between the spouses due to their different species. The goal and wisdom of marriage would not be attainable since the tranquility and love mentioned by Allah in the Quran would be impossible.
It should be noted that there is no direct evidence for such an occurrence. The Prophet (peace be upon him) never referred to such a practice. The narrations concerning such incidences from later authorities cannot, in themselves, be considered proofs concerning this matter. Furthermore, there does not seem to be any evidence that any children existed that had characteristics of being partly jinn and partly human.
Today, in the United Arab Emirates, there is a clan that claims to be descendants from a female jinn. However, their characteristics are no different from any other human. Hence, it is impossible to prove their claim.
Yet what points to the possibility of marriage between the two species, is the mention of female companions (hoor) in paradise. Allah says about them in Surah Ar-Rahmaan.
“In them (paradise) are women limiting [their] glances, untouched before them by man or jinni-” (Ar-Rahmaan: 56)
Dwelling places of Jinn
The jinn live upon the same earth as humans do. Most of them can be found among the ruins and dilapidated areas, as well as the places where there are many impure things, such as, bathrooms, hashish dens, the places of the camels, cemeteries. For that reason, as Ibn Taimiya said, those people who are close to Satan usually inhibit such areas. We often notice Magicians visiting such places at night times.
There are hadith that say that one should not pray in bathrooms due to the impurities present and because it is the abode of Satan, or in cemeteries as this leads to polytheism and it is also a home for the devils. They often avoid human civilization and live far away in the deserts. Matter of fact, most of the people who have encountered jinn are Travelers. Travels in the old days through the deserts of Egypt were more likely to be haunted and distracted by jinn.
Zayd ibn Arqam reported: The Apostle of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“These privies [public bathrooms] are frequented by the jinns and devils [i.e. any jinn in general]. So when anyone amongst you goes there, he should say: ‘I seek refuge in Allah from male and female shaitaan.’” [Dawud: Book 1: Hadith 6]
Narrated by Jabir: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“When night falls, then keep your children close to you, for the devils spread out then. An hour later you can let them free; and close the gates (i.e. doors) of your house (at night), and mention Allah’s Name thereupon (i.e. Bismillah), and cover your utensils (i.e. foods), and mention Allah’s Name thereupon, (and if you don’t have something to cover your utensil) you may put across it something (e.g. a piece of wood, etc.).” [Bukhari: Book 4: Volume 54: Hadith 500]
Another hadith:
“If you can, do not be the first one to enter the marketplace. And do not be the last to leave it. For they are the places of Satan and therein he raises his banner.”
This hadith was recorded in Sahih Muslim. The devils love to sit between the shade and the sunlight; mostly in alleys. For this reason the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the Muslims to sit in such places. This hadith was recorded in the books of Sunan and other works and it is sahih.
Besides these dwellings, the jinns are also known to live underground and within water. Because of their dwellings most jinn carry a foul stench. Many of them avoid the daylight and usually come out during the night. The fact that jinn hide in the shade of the sunlight outdoors & in the shadows of water streams, has been confirmed by many researchers.
How many Jinn can enter one body & how many times?
First of all, I would like you to read the article Jinn Possession, before you can understand the following.
Read Jinn Possession HERE.
Multiple Jinn can possess a single person. It has been confirmed by reliable witnesses. Even today, when a Healer performs an exorcism, he often confronts multiple jinn dwelling inside the possessed body. I have personally witnessed a couple of jinn (husband & wife) dwelling in a single body.
If you read the topic – The Causes of being possessed – in the article Jinn Possession; we come to know of the fact that, it is painful and agonizing for a jinn to possess a body in the first place. They might easily possess someone who does not believe in Allah. However, it is one of their agenda to distract people from the right path and never bother possessing them for they are already on the wrong path. Yet, there are wicked jinn who might still possess a few.
But overall, most of the possessions are the cause of Sihr (witchcraft). We might refer to the article Agreement between a Witch and a Demon – HERE. Looking at the conversation between the Jinn and the Exorcist at the bottom of the article, we can easily conclude that it truly is painful for jinn to possess a human, yet they are forced by Witches to obey their tasks.
About how many times a jinn can possess a human body; it has been witnessed but rarely does the same jinn possesses the same victim multiple times (i.e. after exorcism). Depending on the Faith of the exorcist, the higher the level of Faith, the more his recitation burns the jinn. But it happens in rare cases that the same jinn returns to the same body after exorcism. Since Quran recitation by the exorcists burn the jinn within a possessed body, it is unlikely for the jinn to return.
Sects among Jinn
Brother Shubi asked a very good question. He wanted to know about the reality of sects among jinn, how some of them are Christian as the exorcists speak.
The famous scholar of hadith, al-Amaash said, “A jinn appeared among us. I said to him, ‘What is your favorite food?’ He said, ‘Rice.’ We brought some to him and I would see the spoon go up and down but could not see anyone. I said, ‘Do you also have people of desires [and innovations] among you like what we have?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘What is the situation of the Rafidha [extreme Shia] among you.’ He said, ‘They are the worst of us.’”
Ibn-Kathir wrote, after recording the above story, “I presented its chain to our teacher Abu al-Hajjaj al-Mizi. He said, ‘The chain is authentic back to al-Amaash.’ Then he said, ‘Ibn Asaakeer recorded in the biography of al-Abbas ibn Ahmad al-Dimishqi that he said, ‘I heard some of the jinn recite, ‘The hearts are in pain until they connect with their beloved and are with Him in any place, in the West or East; They are filled with the love of Allah, and Allah is their lord, they are connected to Allah and not to anything of his creation.”’
Coming to the next point of how some of them believe in Messengers and the word of Allah. Allah says in the Quran,
“O! you assembly of jinn and mankind! “Did there not come on to you Messengers from amongst you, reciting unto you My Verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?” They will say: “We bear witness against ourselves.” It was the life of this world that deceived them. And they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.” [al-Anam: 130]
However, there are different opinions about “messengers from among you” Although Most scholars say that Messengers came for Both jinn and Mankind, Since Satan/Iblees is from the realm of the jinn. Yet Some scholars say they have messengers from their own kind. But then again,
‘And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Quran. And when they attended it, they said, “Listen quietly.” And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners.’
‘They (jinn) said: “O our people! Verily! We have heard a Book (this Quran) sent down after Musa (Moses), confirming what came before it, it guides to the truth and to a Straight Path (i.e. Islam).’ [al-Ahqaf: 29-30]
It somehow reflects that the same Messengers truly were sent for both Mankind and the Jinn.
If you read the translation of Surah al-Jinn, it says:
Say (O Muhammad SAW): “It has been revealed to me that a group (from three to ten in number) of jinn listened (to this Quran). They said: ‘Verily! We have heard a wonderful Recital (this Quran)!
‘It guides to the Right Path, and we have believed therein, and we shall never join (in worship) anything with our Lord (Allah).
‘And exalted be the Majesty of our Lord, He has taken neither a wife, nor a son (or offspring or children).
‘And that the foolish among us [i.e. Iblees (Satan) or the polytheists amongst the jinn] used to utter against Allah that which was wrong and not right. *
‘And verily, we thought that men and jinn would not utter a lie against Allah.
‘And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the masculine among the jinn, but they (jinn) increased them (mankind) in sin and disbelief. (It may refer to magicians and demon worshipers)
‘And they thought as you thought, that Allah will not send any Messenger (to mankind or jinn).
[al-Jinn: 1-7]
I hope that the * marked verse of Surah al-jinn clarifies your doubts about, how there are Christians among the jinn.
I would like to quote Surah ar-Rahmaan. Which is another of the Surahs, which by Most Scholars opinion has come down for Both mankind and the jinn. A video with Translation bellow.
About why Christian jinn want one to be dirty for 40 days, it is much generalized. Christian jinn are followers of Satan, all demons would tell a person to remain dirty, but since they are followers of Satan, they rather wish to weaken a person both spiritually and externally. It is one of the agreement between the Witch and the jinn, to keep the subject away from water simply to please Satan, so that the so called christian jinn (in fact a follower of satan) can then claim a reward for what he did.
In fact, all magicians keep away from water for a very long time and the more dirty they become, the more the demons fall in love with them. And they call themselves Christians for unknown reason, just like most of the Mankind call themselves Muslims/Christians Only because they are born in that family, not because they follow the teachings. Yet it is known that the jinn who possesses a person who keeps away from water mostly claims that he is a christian jinn.
Brother, matter of fact is, Iblees is a jinn too, and he worshiped Allah more than any human can ever imagine. What Amaash referred to “Do you also have people of desires [and innovations] among you like what we have?” here, the same innovation can be referred to as the Free-Will; which Jinn and Mankind both have in common.Iblees had a free-will, and because of his self innovation, he thought big of himself.
Please notice – Being a jinn DOES NOT mean that he knows about the inevitable reality. You may refer to the story of Sulayman (as) in the Quran,
“Then when We decreed death for him [Sulayman (Solomon)], nothing informed them (jinns) of his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his stick, so when he fell down, the jinns saw clearly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have stayed in the humiliating torment.” (Saba: 14)
Hence Jinn, if can see us when we cannot see them, does not mean that they know about reality.
A Valley located about 35 KMs to the north-west of Madina in Saudi Arab. A road passes through the bed of the valley. What’s famous about this place is that, cars actually accelerate on their own with their engines off. They are known to accelerate over a stunning 120 Km/hr speed.
You may search on YouTube where people have uploaded their recordings of this experience. Where the engine of the car is turned off and the gear shifted to neutral, the car starts to accelerate on the road that appears to go up-hill. I would like to share one of the videos from YouTube here, for those who want to see what I’m trying to explain here.
The name of the valley was given by the locals for they believed that Jinn lived in these mountains; and that the accelerating of the cars are actually the Jinn pushing them. Only Allah knows best if Jinn live there, but the phenomena of the accelerating cars on a straight road itself, has nothing to do with jinn. This might sound offensive to some, but I would like to re-assure that I have dedicated this website solely for the purpose of making people believe in the existence of Jinn, but I would not lie if once I come to know of the real perspective of a scenario – that it in fact a natural phenomenon, and that it has nothing to do with jinn.
Before I start posting my personal observation, I would like to quote an explanation to this phenomenon called the Magnetic Hill or Gravity Hill.
Gravity hill, also known as Magnetic hill (and sometimes a mystery hill or a gravity road), is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces the optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope. Thus, a car left out of gear will appear to be rolling uphill. There are hundreds of gravity hill locations around the world. Here is a list of other similar places on our Planet:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_magnetic_hills
Further Explanation
The slope of gravity hills is an optical illusion, although tour guides may claim natural or even supernatural forces are at work. The most important factor contributing to the illusion is a completely or mostly obstructed horizon; without a horizon, judging the slope of a surface is difficult as a reliable reference is missing. Objects one would normally assume to be more-or-less perpendicular to the ground (such as trees) may actually be leaning, offsetting the visual reference. The illusion is similar to the well-known Ames room, in which balls can also appear to roll against gravity.
Here’s another example of the above phenomenon:
I would like to re-quote a line from the above explanation that is suffice to explain the phenomenon in the Valley of Jinn – “The most important factor contributing to the illusion is a completely or mostly obstructed horizon; without a horizon, judging the slope of a surface is difficult as a reliable reference is missing.” This is very obvious in all the videos on YouTube. There is no horizon, hence no reliable reference to judge the slope of the road.
One of the easiest ways to prove that the surface of the road that APPEARS to go UP-HILL is actually DOWN-HILL is to take an Inclinometer to the site and put it on the road to see how it is actually proves the opposite. You would then look around and see the road appearing to go up-hill, yet the inclinometer would suggest that it is in fact down-hill.
But since I cannot afford to go to the blessed land Madina and take a visit to the site myself, I have improvised another way to prove that the road is actually down-hill, and not really flat as it appears in the videos. I have used the software Google Earth for this purpose, and it is actually very helpful to find out distance and elevations of these surfaces from a satellite view.
I would like you to take a look at this image, and read the explanation along its side. If it is hard for you to understand, you may click the image to view it in full size.
The Red circle in the image is where the cars turn off their engines and start to accelerate down the road towards Madina. Google Earth shows you the elevation of the surface on which you hover your mouse over; I find the elevation at the point of the Red circle to be 948. I then come down the road for about 7Kms, and then mark another point that is the Blue circle. The elevation here was 638.
We notice, there is a drop of 310 Meters in just 7 KMs. I estimated the angle of inclination by taking multiple sites on the same road, and I find the average inclination of the road to be 11.5 Degrees downwards South. Knowing this fact, no matter what we see apparently on the side of the road, we have to admit to the fact that this road is in fact a downward-slope, and that the accelerating of cars is actually the Nature of Allah Subhanahu Wa ta’ala.
For those who wish to find out an inclination ought to take the Distance as the Hypotenuse, and NOT as the Base of the triangle, for that is the way GoogleEarth works. You may then find the Base-Distance via Pythagoras Theorem and eventually find the angle of inclination via Cos(A) = base/hyp = 11.5.
