RUQYA FOR CHILDREN


Ruqya consists of words said or written in the form of dua (supplication) or dhikr (remembrance of Allah) for the purpose of protection and cure. It is sometimes accompanied with certain actions such as blowing or wiping over someone to whom it is applied. Our Prophet ﷺ warned against any type of Ruqya which involves shirk (associating partners with Allah).
According to Ibn Hajar (RA), there is a consensus amongst the ulama that Ruqya is permissible when it satisfies three conditions:

1. It should be with Allah (SWT) words or using His names and attributes.
2. It should be in the Arabic language or in a language which is understood by the people.
3. One must believe that it does not have an independent power by itself but by Allah (SWT) will.
The below chapters of the Qur'an are known from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ to be a means of protection for adults and children alike:

Al-Fatihah - (1: 1-7)
Ayat al-Kursi – (2: 255)
Surah Ikhlas – (112)
Surah Falaq – (113)
Suran Nas – (114)

The last three chapters of the Qur’an are called Al-Mu’awwidhaat "The protecting ones"

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Read the Mu’awwidhaat three times in the evening and in the morning. This will protect you from all harmful things.”

A'isha (RAA) narrated that whenever Allah’s Messenger ﷺ went to bed, he would bring the palms of both hands together and blow into them while reciting the Mu'awwidhaat. He would then rub his hands wherever he could reach of his body; starting with his head, face and the front of his body. He would do this three times. When he was too ill, he asked me to do this for him.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Abu Said al-Khudri (RAA) reported: “Allah’s Messenger (SAW) used to seek Allah’s protection from jinns and evil eye with various supplications until the two mu’awwithat were revealed. After that he (SAW) adhered to them and left everything else.” – (At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah)

Abu Said al-Khudri (RAA) narrated that Jibreel (AS) visited the Prophet ﷺ while he was sick and said to him, “O Muhammad, are you sick?” He ﷺ replied, “Yes.” Jibreel (AS) then read:

“Bismillahi arqik, min kulli shay’in yu’thik, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘ayni haasid”

“With Allah’s Name I shelter you, from all that ails you, from the evil of any soul and that of the envious eye. May Allah cure you; with Allah’s Name I shelter you.” – (Muslim)

Uthman ibn Affan (RAA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “Nothing would harm a slave who says three times every morning and evening:

‘Bismillah il-lathi laa yadurru ma’ asmihi shay’un fil ardi wala fis-sama’I wahuw as-sami ul-alim’

‘I shelter myself with the name of Allah, the One with whose name nothing can cause harm or earth or in the heaven. He is the Healer, the Knower.’” – (Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi)

The Prophet ﷺ has taught us how to avoid the evil eye. Children especially, are vulnerable to the evil eye. The supplications we can make for our children are given below:

Abdullah ibn Abbas (RAA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ sought Allah’s protection for his grandchildren, al-Hasan and al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) with the same supplication that the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) sought protection for his children Ismael (AS) and Is'haq (AS):

“A'oudhu bikalimati illah it-taammah, min kulli shaytaanin wa-haammah, wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah”

“I seek refuge with Allah’s complete words from every devil and harmful creature, and from every envious eye.” (Bukhari)
And Allah (SWT) tells us that upon delivering Maryam (AS), her mother sought Allah’s protection for her and her descendents from Satan:

“Allahumma inni a'oudhu bika wa dhurriyyataha minash-shaytaanir-rajeem.”


“O Allah, I put her [him], and her [his] progeny under Your protection from Satan, the accursed” (Al-Imran: 36)

When Jinn are Good Jinn then we simply refer to them as Jinn and Spirits; and when they (Jinn) are bad and evil, then we call them Demons and Devils. TA'WEEZ

The word “Ta’weez” is an Urdu representation of the Arabic word “Ta’weedh”, which is often translated as Amulet. The root of this word is “Ya’oodhu” which means to seek protection and refuge. This word is not used specifically by the prophet himself but was used by past scholars. The word used in general by the prophet was “Tameemah” and at other times, he used the name of specific type of Ta’weez being referred to. THE ORIGINS OF TA’WEEZ According to one non-Muslim cultural anthropologist, amulets are among the most common objects unearthed by excavators at archaeological sites. However, some of the oldest Ta’weez excavated date back to the ancient civilisations of Sumeria, Babylonia and Egypt.
